On Friday, April 27th Chris Coleman, Wales Football Manager, visited Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg. The school held a question and answer session with Chris before he was photographed with the School football teams. The pupils enjoyed Chris’ honesty, integrity and charisma in answering the questions asked.

Stwnsh come to play

Last week, two presenters from the S4C program ‘Stwnsh’ came to visit year 7 and 8 pupils. The screams of laughter could be heard through the corridors, as pupils enjoyed a morning of fun and games in the School Hall.

Our Trip to North Wales

Our welsh class came to school far more excited than usual this St David’s day, knowing that this year’s festival would be something special. We were setting off on a three day trip around Wales, organised by the welsh department. The aim of the trip was for us to gain a better understanding of the subjects we have and will be studying during the course, but we also learnt a great deal about our heritage and came back having had a fantastic time and feeling proud to be welsh.

NACE Cymru Challenge Award

YSGOL GYFUN BRO MORGANNWG is the 1st Welsh Medium Secondary School and the 11th school in Wales to achieve the prestigious NACE Cymru Challenge Award for More Able and Talented Pupils. This Award is given for high quality work by the whole school, teachers and governors, in challenging all pupils, including those with high abilities, to achieve their best.

Assessors, who spent a day in the school, were impressed by strong leadership and management of provision which keeps the needs of more able learners at the forefront of the school’s work and the good support and challenge provided by the Governors.

Assessors judged the quality of the school’s work by observing lessons, interviewing the pupils, teachers, parents and governors and by looking at the pupils’ work. The Award is given when schools demonstrate that they meet the criteria of the Award and will remain committed to continuing to ensure high-quality provision for more able and talented pupils.

Fairtrade Fortnight

During Fairtrade Fortnight, a Fairtrade Shop is being held every break and lunchtime. Year 7 will also be taking part in a Fairtrade Day on 06/03/12.

Sports Transition Day

Science Transition Day

On 31 January, 18 pupils from our partner primary schools came to Ysgol Bro Morgannwg to take part in a Science Workshop along with 10 year 7 pupils. The theme was ‘Shipwreck’ and there were many extensive activities.

School Eisteddfod

The School Eisteddfod will be held on Wednesday 1st February at Barry Memorial Hall. Pupils have been busy competing in homework competitions and they are practising hard in their school houses.

Rotary Competition Winner

On Tuesday 17 January nine pupils from schools around the Vale took part in the first round of the Rotary Cooking Competition. The winner was Ryan James, yr 10 Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg.

Year 8 pupil, Lowri Jones will be performing along with the stars of the ‘Holiday on Ice’ production when it comes to Cardiff in February. We wish her all the best as she prepares for the show in February.

Prizegiving Ceremony 2012

Serre Chevalier, Skiing Trip 2011

Languages Transition Day 2011

On Tuesday year 6 pupils from all 5 of our feeder schools came to Ysgol Bro Morgannwg for a Languages Transition Day. They started the day with croissants and juice served by the sixth formers before going on to French parachute games in the hall, making Christmas cards in the Art department and many other taster activities in Spanish, German and French.

Welsh Gymnastic Champions

Congratulations to years 7, 8 and 9 pupils on their successes in the Welsh Gymnastics Competition held this week, especially to the year 7 boys team who are now Welsh Champions, Joseff Williams, Andrew Lewis, Rhys Davies, Gethin Evans, Jac Marshall and Saul Connelly. The year 7 girls team came 4th in Wales and both years 8 & 9 boys and girls team came 3rd in Cardiff and the Vale. Many Congratulations to everyone who took part.

Children in Need 2011

£1,185.43 was raised by staff and pupils at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg for Children in Need this year. Activities such as a spot kick, face painting and having a photo with Pudsey were arranged. There was a cake and sweet stall and staff and pupils wore spotty or stripy clothes for the day.

European Prize for Ysgol Y Fro

A Bro Morgannwg teacher has recently been awarded with a major European e-learning prize. Funded by the European Commission, the competition identified top practices of social media use in formal language learning contexts across Europe.

Congratulations to year 7 pupil Lois Aled who came 4th in a nationwide spelling competition organised by CILT and Routes into Languages. She reached an amazing standard of spelling in a tight and tense final held recently at the National Museum, Cardiff.

An Important Event

On the 25th of June many pupils and staff participated in the National Eisteddfod's Proclamation Ceremony. The Eisteddfod will be held in August 2012. Following a parade through the streets of Barry, the ceremony took place in Gladstone Gardens.

We are delighted to celebrate the fantastic news that year 8 pupil Ffion Byrne brought back the title of British Tumble Champion 2011 to Bro Morgannwg and Wales, following the British Schools Tumbling Finals in Stoke on Trent on May the 7th. An astounding feat - well done!

South Wales Spelling Bee

The 4 winners of the Year 7 French Spelling Bee Competition from Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg recently went to Ysgol Cwrt Sart near Neath to take part in the South Wales Finals. Lois Aled, Nia Brown, Nia Fenn and Terry James all did superbly, but only Lois went through to the final round. Lois finished second out of all the contestants.

BBC School Report

Some pupils from year 7, 8 and 9 have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to create news bulletins for the BBC. In the video conference room they had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss experiences with professional presenters of the BBC e.g. Huw Edwards and Sian Lloyd. They then had to design and create their own news bulletins. The bulletins will be displayed on the school and the BBC website and the BBC on March 24th.
