Exam Board: WJEC
Why study Mathematics?
The Mathematics Department is pleased to offer both A level an AS level courses to our students in years 12 and 13.
We present an interesting and stimulating course that has an attractive specification.
Apart from sharpening your logical skills, mathematics can open a door to your future.
In general, mathematics with mechanics is the course to choose if you want to specialise in physics, engineering or electronics. The mathematics with statistics option is best if you intend to study accountancy, economics or biology.
Entry Requirements
To study A level mathematics you are expected to have obtained at least a B grade at G.C.S.E higher level.
What is the content of the course?
The courses we follow at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg are modular in nature and are examined externally by the WJEC. There is no coursework.
The essential details are outlined below:
Each AS candidate will take three modules
Each A level candidate will take six modules.
Each module is examined and is equal in its contribution to the overall grade.
Each exam will last ninety minutes.
The following units are available:
C1-C4 Pure Mathematics; M1-M2 Mechanics; S1-S2 Statistics
What is the structure of the course?
AS level students will take units C1 and C2, TOGETHER WITH ONE UNIT FROM M1, S1, AND C3:
The options are outlined below
Option
| Name of qualification
|
C1, C2, M1
| MATHEMATICS (AS)
|
C1, C2, S1

Each A2 level student will follow modules C1, C2, C3, C4 together with an extra two modules as outlined below:

In order to follow the AS and A level courses a minimum requirement is a B grade at GCSE. If you are less than confident with your algebraic skills then it’s expected that you are willing to work diligently on the algebra “catch up” course offered by the department.
If these details look dauntingly complicated – don’t worry! Come and have a chat with one of the mathematics teachers and all shall become crystal clear.
If you are unsure of your chosen path then “Mathematics with M1 and S1” is a safe bet and a very good grounding in the subject.
Possible Careers
There are plenty of openings for mathematicians including accountancy and actuarial work, becoming a statistician, a teacher or a high profile career in the world of banking.
